AIKCU recently distributed $48,000 in ‘UPS Scholarships’ to students at 20 Kentucky private colleges and universities. The scholarships were made possible by a grant from the UPS Educational Endowment Fund administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC.

One student at each AIKCU member institution was chosen to receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship. Recipients must be full-time undergraduates and either first-generation, low-income, minority or new American students.

AIKCU salutes the UPS Foundation and CIC for their continued support of private college students in Kentucky and throughout the country. As these excerpts from student thank you letters reveal, these $2,400 scholarships make a huge difference for students striving to attain their degrees.

While I have always struggled to pay for my tuition, this year has been especially hard due to my acceptance of an unpaid internship. My on campus and off campus obligations have left little time for me to work at my paid part-time job. – Loren, Bellarmine University

The news of your scholarship came five days after my husband was laid off from his job of two years. My gratitude is immeasurable in a time of such trial; I have been reminded that there is hope to succeed even when the light seems dim….My aspiration of being the first to attain a college degree in my immediate family is so incredibly high. – Kathryn, Campbellsville University

I dropped two days on my work schedule to help increase my study time and give me more time to do my homework. This was all made possible because your company offers students additional financial aid.  – Austin, University of Pikeville

Nationally, CIC distributed grants of nearly $1.5 million this year. The UPS Scholarships are funded by the UPS Educational Endowment, which is held and administered by CIC. The Endowment was established in the 1970’s by the UPS Foundation to support programs to benefit underserved populations. Since its inception, the Endowment has generated over $50 million in scholarship support for more than 17,000 students at independent colleges and universities.

“UPS is proud to continue that spirit of giving by partnering with CIC to support thousands of students working to become the leaders of tomorrow by obtaining an education from our nation’s independent colleges,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. “We are proud, too, that The UPS Foundation and UPS employees directed $97.5 million in philanthropy and in-kind services, including more than 1.8 million hours of volunteer service, to local communities around the world.”
